Internet Explorer 8 update
Lots of people are experiencing browser freezes and crashes that didn’t happen with earlier versions of Internet Explorer. There are also many things IE 8 won’t let you do, due to its default security settings. Loosening up IE’s security relieves some of both problems.
Bob Rankin (popular internet technical advisor) recommends turning off SmartScreen Filter. Apparently you don’t really need SmartScreen and it’s another potential source of problems – although I myself use it, because it does add some additional protection (and I have not bumped into problems with my IE8……….I mostly use Firefox) .
Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 enable “memory protection” by default, but this also blocks some legitimate software, and once again ….may crash IE! To disable memory protection go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security and uncheck the Enable Protected Mode box. Then restart IE.
Not sure what version of Internet Explorer you are using? When you have your browser open, click on Help —> about IE. This will show you a screen that tells you what version you have installed on your computer.
